Meet Karen
Karen Alexander is a Hunter Valley local, who graduated with a Bachelor of Occupational Therapy degree from the University of Newcastle in 2002.
Karen has extensive experience, having worked in both the public and private sectors, including senior and specialist positions, as well as in hospitals and in the community. In occupational therapy circles she is well known for her expertise in home modifications, particularly those of a complex nature. She is also recognised for her work in community-based spinal cord injury rehabilitation.
With a well-regarded reputation and a robust network of industry contacts cultivated over her years in the field, Karen embarked on a new venture in 2023 by establishing Made To Measure Occupational Therapy. Her wealth of experience serves as the cornerstone of the business, enabling her to deliver personalised care that significantly improves individuals’ independence and overall well-being.

Our services
Karen predominantly works with adult clients who have physical and neurological disabilities in the Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Cessnock, and Maitland areas.
She has a special interest in working with individuals who need complex home modifications, and those who have a spinal cord injury.
Karen mostly works with NDIS participants, however those under other funding bodies or privately funded are welcomed to enquire regarding services.
In most cases assessments and therapies are conducted in the comfort of a client’s home.
Karen also offers mentoring to occupational therapists working with clients who need home modifications.
Assessments
We offer occupational therapy assessments and reports.
- These examine a person’s ability to perform the tasks they do and would like to do in their day, identifying a person’s strengths and limitations, and the support they need.
- Types include Functional Capacity Assessments, Activities of Daily Living (ADL) Assessments, Pressure Care Assessments and Wheelchair Assessments.
Findings are used to develop a personalised support plan, which may include recommendations for home modifications, assistive technology, or strategies to improve function and independence.
Home Modifications
We can assist you with minor and complex home modifications.
- Minor home modifications refer to small-scale changes made to a person’s home to improve its accessibility and ease of use. They may also improve a person’s independence and safety. Examples include installing a grab rail in a shower recess or a handrail at steps.
- Complex home modifications are extensive alterations made to a person’s home with the goal of improving accessibility, ease of use, independence, and safety. These are usually high cost and may involve large scale redesign of areas of a home. Examples include creating a wheelchair accessible bathroom or installation of a lift to enable access to the home.
Assistive Technology
We can assist you with assistive technology.
- Assistive Technology refers to any device, system or equipment that helps a person with a disability perform a task that they might otherwise find difficult or impossible to do. This can range from simple, low-tech solutions like a shower chair or height-adjustable chair, to high-tech devices such as a fully customised manual or power wheelchair.
- The goal of Assistive Technology is to empower people with disabilities, allowing them to participate fully in all aspects of life.
OT Mentoring
We can provide one off or ongoing mentoring sessions for occupational therapists requiring guidance with prescribing home modifications.
What these sessions look like will be tailored to the individual.
